Intelligence

Robert Sternberg Triarchic Theory

One definition of intelligence is having the ability to adapt to one’s environment. With this definition being stated it shows that everyone is intelligent however, this is not where the problem occurs. What happens when you are not in your environment? Does that change your level of intelligences? This is what happen as we tend to test children as we do standardize testing and other methods of measuring our Intellectual development, putting labels on us from a young age instead of understanding that we are all different and that test do not determine our intelligence or success in life. The beauty of life is that everyone is unique and that we all have something different to bring to table in which test cannot measure. We must accept the fact that we all have different levels of intelligence in which makes us different individuals. Modern theorist has come up with the different components of an individual intelligence and I would like to talk about Robert Sternberg Triarchic Theory. This theory states that there are three intelligence that a person can have which is practical intelligence, creative intelligence and analytical intelligence. Practical intelligence is the reaction to your environment and how you make change, creative is how you approach new information and task and analytical is how a person analyze and process information.

As a teacher in the classroom I would want to put this theory to use because everyone is different, and I would want my students to know that it is ok to be different. Just because someone is better in something does not mean you’re a failure. I would want them to realize that they have a gift like everyone else and that it is ok to use that gift as a way to be you and also help others and share knowledge as life is all about learning and each day is a new day to learn something new. So how can you consider yourself unintelligent because of test or judgement that others must stay about you when everyday your learning something new do to the gifts that you.

I chose to talk about this theorist and his theory because being at school and taking test like the ACT, I did not do my best the first go arounds and teachers began to talk about me and say things like how are you at the top of your class but not scoring high on these test. Me personal was not a good test taker and I use to get offended as I felt like a failure and that a test determined my future and all my plans in life and that I would not be anything because of this. However, by reading Sternberg theory I connect with it because it does not make me feel any less smart than what I am. I show me that we all are stronger and weaker in different areas and that someone who might do better on the test because of their analytical intelligence does mean that you are dumb. It shows that the next person might be better at their creative or practical intelligence and that we can all learn from each other. However, test do not show that it a person who does bad on a test can do better in the classroom and making connections to the things they learn with the community around them or a person might be able to relate to the work through art and other creative ideas that test do not show or take an attraction to.

Practical

We see Ed who is seen to be dim-witted however besides all that Ed is a very kind and carrying person, who always have a positive attitude and looks out for the others. He can be seen as having a strong Practical Intelligence.

Analytical

Edd is seen to the more mature curios one of the three. He is seen to be top of class and always try to help everyone, he is considered to have a “high IQ”, and he would be having more of the Analytical Intelligence.

Creative

This leaves Eddy who is seen as the leader of the group. At times he can be arrogant and self-centered, but he always has plans and ideas for the group in which he would poses more of the creative Intelligence.
