Gender Roles

Chapter 8 of the human lifespan focuses on Gender Development and for this section I would like to focus on Kholberg’s Theory which pertains to the Cognitive Development Theory. Kholberg theorized that there are three process that occurs that helps an individual determine a gender role. These three processes would be Gender Identity, Gender Stability, and Gender Constancy. Gender Identity occur from the ages of 3-4 and in this stage an individual can discriminate rather someone is a male or female. This can be determined through the understanding of your own genitalia and the appearance of others. As well at this age children think gender is mutable. The next stage is the Gender Stability Stage which takes place at the age of 4-6 approximately. As stated in the last stage children believe that gender is mutable however when they enter the stability stage, they realize that gender that not change over time, a male will remain male and female remains a female. The thirds and final stage is the Constancy Stage which a child understand that gender remains the same despite appearance change we also tend to see stereotypes in this stage based on actives and task that they individuals doing that they target to a masculine or feminine thing.

I can relate this topic to me from when I was younger as I did not know much about gender until I was around the age of four or five. During that time I remember asking questions as I was curios or when I saw someone who was a man but or women but wore clothes of the opposite sex being confused as I lacked knowledge pertaining to gender. But know only that pertains to me but the OSIR test which indicated that on the masculinity and feminine scales I showed 87 percent masculinity and 99 femininity. I was upset at first but when I realized the question that I answer do not make me feminine or any less masculine. Connecting this back to The Constancy stage we see certain things in ways based on gender an as a society we tend to make labels for this and that being a woman or man thing. This does not change you are making you different and I realized that when I was taking the assessment.

As an educator I feel that this is important dealing with younger students as they can tend to feel embarrassed if they do not know about their bodies. As well we can see early forms of bullying from a young age as boys and girls see the opposite sex as gross or individuals they do not want to be around. I also feel that it is import that this is talked about with your students today as we do not want to offend individuals when it comes to the different communities and appearances of individual that you come across in the world. From a young age they can be able to handle situations better when it comes to interacting with people and when they see people who in their eyes are different. As we see children might ask questions or point at individuals with no harm to it but it can offend individuals.

I feel that Steven Universe appropriately fits this section as this cartoon has been very controversial do the tendencies that Steven and other characters portray making the tv show overall an acceptance to same sex dating and relationship. I made this connection because even with this it shows that the characters who are male and the characters who are females do not change.
