Identity

Chapter 7 of the development across the human lifespan focuses on identity. Identity focuses on the notion of who am I which is very important because it tells who you are. Identity is an inward view of the self that may be affect by nature and nurture, others’ perceptions of you and your own self-concept. Within this section the main components detail the development of self, Sigmund Freud’s Theory of Personality and Psychosexual Stages of Development, and Erikson’s Eight Stages of Man and Marci’s Identity Statuses.  For this chapter I will be focusing on Psychosexual Stages of Development. There are five stages: Oral, anal, phallic, latency, and adolescences. Oral stage is infancy as the focus libido is the mouth. Infants began to spit anything out bad and swallow anything good creating a oral stimulation based on pleasure. Next is the anal stage which is toddlerhood. This focus is the bladder and anal areas as potty training ids very important here as a sense of control. Then we have the phallic stage which is early childhood and if focuses on the genitals as children began to realize that there is a difference between girls and boys as well as the Oedipus Complex is experienced. After that we have the Latency stage which is Middle Childhood and the focus is on relationship building and excelling in school build skills. And the final stage is genital which is adolescence, and this is the focus of the genitals and embracing sexual maturity as they go through puberty.

This information relates to my own development because as I read about this, I realized how I went through these stages and how they affected me. Not only remembering when I went through these stages but how I was taught and how as a grow the ways I which I was taught or questioning the length it took for me to be taught this information. Somethings I had to learn on my own which is not always bad, but at times it can be embarrassing especially when you are learning form your peers. However, it is a part of growth and maturity. As well when it comes to the to the theory of personality I can totally related with the three stages as I growing up always was caught up in the Id stage as I always wanted this or that as I wanted to fit in or just not be bullied. Then when I could not get it I always wished or fantasied that I has it and how I would feel with having certain things in life. And as I continue to grow and mature I continue to learn from the Super ego identity and continue to grow and think to why things are the way they are and how can I overcome or state my opinion on certain things that is going on. An example of this would be my senior year we wanted certain privileges like other schools had when it came to leaving campus for lunch or less restrictions on certain events that we have at school. We had to find respectful ways to plead or cases and show our stance on these events.

As a future educator I want to make sure that I can allow my students thrive in the classroom as they go thought this stages and learn being educated so they want have to be embarrassed of feel bullied as they go through normal stages in life. For instance, dealing with elementary students and the Id personality I would want to educate my students on why they cannot just say everything is theirs and try to take things from others just because of what they think to be theirs. Also, when it comes to junior high and high school students this is important in dealing with as students are going through puberty and might be bullied are embarrassed on things they can not control so I would want to educate my students properly on  beauty of life and the body and identity showing that everyone is different and that it is nothing wrong with being who you are as it makes you special.

I choose these two clip of Amazing world of Gumball as they rapidly show the increase of maturity of Darwin which takes him through the five stages Psycho-sexual stages of development from oral all the way to genital. As he learns how to eat, walk, about himself as a fish and many more.
